Key West Catch of the Week - 40-Pound Grouper
Despite the fact that the summer season has come to a close, the fish are biting just as much as ever. This was no more evident than this past week, when Key West saw a plethora of astounding hauls that would shock even the most experienced of anglers. The highlight of this splendid fishing week took the form of two massive 40 pound Groupers that were caught in the crystal clear waters of Key West. These impressive catches were brought in by Cindy and Lauranne, who were visiting from Sarasota, FL. Cindy and Lauranne reeled in these fish during an unforgettable outing when Key West deep sea fishing on one of our fishing charters, known as The Ultra Grand Slam. Though these Groupers were exceedingly heavy for their species, it's clear that Lauranne and Cindy were more than up for the task.
Grouper are an extremely unique species of fish, immediately identifiable due to their rather large mouths. While Grouper have been recorded at over 500 pounds, these are known as Giant Groupers and are typically found within the waters surrounding China. There are many different types of Grouper, which can be explained due to their positioning as a genera within a subfamily of fish species. The ones most commonly found in the Florida Keys, as well as the ones caught by Cindy and Lauranne, are typically referred to as Black Grouper.
This species can range anywhere from 10 to well over 100 pounds, making the fact that both Lauranne and Cindy caught 40 pound Groupers a very impressive feat. Aside from their large mouths, Grouper can be spotted by their black fins and cheeks. They also make for a tasty dish, as this type of Grouper is known to be the most appetizing of its kind. If you want to catch Grouper, and are considering taking one of our charters out for some Key West deep sea fishing, then it's recommended that you use fresh pinfish or Blue Runners for bait and maybe even use the Trolling technique to catch one of these.
