Summer Tarpon Fishing In Key West
It is no secret that fishing in Key West and the Florida Keys is great throughout the year. Tens of thousands of fishing enthusiasts, both novices and experts alike, come down to Key West and the Florida Keys every year to experience the kind of fishing that can be found no where else in the country. The past few months have been consistently great for fishing. Last week we saw a string of windy and stormy days, only to be followed by some of the most successful fishing in Key West yet! This is typical of a stormy spell, once the storm passes over, the marine life is more active than usual – an excellent scenario for fishing trips!
This week I wanted to focus on one of the most active species out there right now – the tarpon. Tarpon are known as one of the most exciting species to go after in the shallows and flats areas. These guys can be found throughout the year, with February through August being the peak months. But during these months, May and June are without question the busiest for tarpon fishing. This is thanks to the species' spawning season. So now as we approach the middle of June, it's the ideal time to get out there and do some serious tarpon fishing! Tarpon are known for being extra active at dawn and at dusk. So if tarpon fishing in Key West is definitely something you want to experience, book an early morning or late afternoon charter trip. For tarpon fishing in Key West we use light tackle or fly fishing. These techniques for flats fishing in Key West are significantly different than the ones used for the deeper offshore waters. If you have never experienced a light tackle or fly fishing trip, do it during this time of the year when the flats species are extremely active and ready to put on quite a fight!
